North Cyprus by Rental Car: A 7-Day Road Trip Itinerary

North Cyprus is small enough to cross in two hours and dense enough to fill a fortnight. This is a seven-day itinerary built around a rental car from Ercan Airport, with realistic drive times rather than optimistic ones.

Day 1 — Land at Ercan, base yourself in Kyrenia

Collect your car in arrivals and drive over the Beşparmak pass to Kyrenia — around 35 minutes. Spend the afternoon at the Venetian harbour and Kyrenia Castle, which holds the Shipwreck Museum and the oldest recovered trading vessel in the world. Eat on the harbour front and go no further; you have six days.

Day 2 — St Hilarion and Bellapais

St Hilarion Castle is twenty minutes up the mountain and worth the early start, both for the light and for the temperature. The climb through the ruins is steep — proper shoes. Afterwards drop down to Bellapais Abbey, fifteen minutes from Kyrenia, and have lunch under the tree Lawrence Durrell wrote about in Bitter Lemons.

Day 3 — The west: Lapta, Güzelyurt and Soli

Drive west along the coast through Lapta and Alsancak, then on to Güzelyurt and the Roman site of Soli with its basilica mosaics. Vouni Palace sits above it on a hilltop with one of the best sea views on the island. Roughly an hour each way from Kyrenia; the coast road is quick and easy.

Day 4 — Nicosia, the divided capital

Thirty minutes south over the pass. Park outside the Venetian walls and walk in. The Selimiye Mosque — a Gothic cathedral converted after 1570 — is the single most striking building in North Cyprus, and the Büyük Han caravanserai nearby is the best place on the island for coffee. Ledra Street is a pedestrian-only crossing point to the south if you want to see both halves.

Day 5 — Salamis and Famagusta

An hour east from Kyrenia. Start at Salamis, a Roman city on the sea with a gymnasium, theatre and bath complex you can walk straight into. Then Famagusta's walled city: Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (formerly St Nicholas Cathedral), Othello's Tower, and the ramparts. The sealed suburb of Varosha is partially open and unlike anything else in Europe.

Day 6 — The Karpaz Peninsula

This is the big one, and it needs a full day and a full tank. From Kyrenia allow around two and a half hours to Golden Beach (Altınkum) — an empty, undeveloped stretch of sand at the tip of the island. On the way you will pass the wild donkeys the peninsula is known for and the Apostolos Andreas Monastery. Fuel stations thin out badly past Yenierenköy, so fill up before it. Surfaces are variable; an SUV rental is the comfortable choice for this day.

Day 7 — Beaches, then the airport

Finish at Alagadi (Turtle) Beach east of Kyrenia — green and loggerhead turtles nest here between May and October — or at Long Beach in İskele if you are staying on the east coast. Return the car to Ercan on your way out; drop-off at the airport is free.

Practical notes for the drive

• Drive on the left. Roundabouts give way to the right.
• Fuel before Karpaz, and before any long mountain day.
• Start early in summer. Ruins with no shade at 2pm in August are a mistake you make once.
• Mountain descents — use a low gear rather than the brakes.
• Book an automatic if you are new to left-hand traffic; the hill starts are the hard part.

Every location in this itinerary is reachable in a standard rental car except Karpaz, where higher clearance genuinely helps. All of it is impractical without one.
