The Best Time to Visit North Cyprus — and What It Means for Car Rental
Spring and autumn are the island at its best — and, not coincidentally, when rental cars are cheapest and most available.
North Cyprus has a long season and a short winter, but the differences between March and August are large enough to change what kind of holiday you have — and what you pay for a rental car in North Cyprus.
Spring (March–May): the best all-round window
Wildflowers on the Beşparmak range, comfortable temperatures for walking the ruins at Salamis and climbing St Hilarion, and sea warm enough by late May. This is the ideal time for a North Cyprus road trip: the mountain drives are at their best and the Karpaz Peninsula is green rather than scorched. Rental rates are moderate and availability is good, including automatics.
Summer (June–August): beaches and heat
Hot — regularly above 35°C inland in July and August — and busy. Perfect for Long Beach, Alagadi and Karpaz Golden Beach; punishing for open archaeological sites in the middle of the day. Start early, drive in the afternoon with the air conditioning on, and swim in between.
This is peak season for car rental in North Cyprus. The island's fleet is finite and automatics sell out first. Book two to three weeks ahead if you are travelling in this window.
Autumn (September–October): the connoisseur's choice
Arguably better than spring. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of heating, the crowds have gone, and daytime temperatures are back in the pleasant range. Rental prices ease off after the first week of September. If your dates are flexible, this is when to come.
Winter (November–February): quiet, green and cheap
Mild by European standards, with most rain falling between December and February. The landscape turns genuinely green, the ruins are empty, and the mountain villages are at their most atmospheric. Not beach weather, but excellent for driving, hiking and eating. This is the cheapest time to rent a car in Northern Cyprus, and availability is never a problem.
One driving note: winter rain makes the mountain roads to St Hilarion and Kantara slippery, and some unsealed beach tracks become impassable. Take the descents slowly.
How the season affects your rental
- Peak (July–August, New Year) — highest rates, tightest availability, book 2–3 weeks ahead, request automatics early.
- Shoulder (April–June, September–October) — best balance of weather, price and choice.
- Low (November–March) — lowest rates, full choice of vehicles, book a few days ahead.
Whatever the month, free Ercan Airport delivery, comprehensive insurance and 24/7 support are unchanged — only the price and the queue for the good weather move.
