The western third of North Cyprus gets a fraction of the visitors and has some of its best Roman ruins. It also has almost no buses, which is where a car comes in.
Most visitors to North Cyprus never go west of Nicosia. That is their loss and your opportunity: Güzelyurt (Morphou) and Lefke hold two of the island's better Roman sites, a hilltop palace with the best sea view on the coast, and beaches you will frequently have entirely to yourself.
What they do not have is public transport worth the name. Renting a car in Güzelyurt or Lefke is not a convenience here — it is the only practical way to see any of it.
Güzelyurt: citrus country
Güzelyurt sits in the middle of North Cyprus's orange belt, about 55 km and fifty minutes from Ercan Airport. The town itself is workaday rather than picturesque, with a good archaeological museum in the old bishopric, but it makes a sensible base for the west.
Driving here is easy — light traffic, free parking, wide roads. Nicosia is forty minutes east, Kyrenia about an hour northeast over the range.
Lefke: the one worth staying in
Twenty-five minutes further west, Lefke is the prettier of the two: Ottoman mansions, water channels, citrus groves running down toward the sea, and a pace that has not changed much in decades. It is about 80 km and seventy minutes from Ercan.
Below it, Gemikonağı has an old copper-mining pier and a long, quiet beach. This is the emptiest stretch of coast on the island.
What to actually drive to
- Soli Ancient City — Roman basilica mosaics and a theatre cut into the hillside. Fifteen minutes from Lefke, twenty from Güzelyurt.
- Vouni Palace — a Persian-era palace on a hilltop above Soli, with a view over Morphou Bay that justifies the climb on its own.
- Güzelyurt Museum — archaeology and natural history, better than it sounds.
- The west coast beaches — long, undeveloped and usually empty.
Which car, and how you get it
An economy or standard car is all this region asks for. The roads are good, the distances moderate and parking is free everywhere. An automatic is worth requesting if you are adjusting to driving on the left, but there are no serious hills here of the sort you meet above Kyrenia.

The west pairs naturally with a Nicosia day: drive out to Soli and Vouni in the morning, come back through the capital in the afternoon. Or make it a loop from Kyrenia along the north coast through Lapta and Alsancak — a genuinely lovely drive, and one you will share with almost nobody.
