Can You Take a Rental Car from North Cyprus to the South?

This is one of the most common questions we get before a booking: can I drive a North Cyprus rental car into the Republic of Cyprus in the south? The short answer is that it depends on your rental agreement and, above all, on insurance — not on whether the crossing itself is open.

The crossings are open

Several checkpoints connect north and south. The main vehicle crossings are Metehan/Agios Dometios in Nicosia, Beyarmudu/Pergamos and Akyar/Strovilia in the east. Ledra Street in central Nicosia is pedestrian only. You will need your passport at the checkpoint.

The issue is insurance, not the border

A vehicle insured in the TRNC is not automatically covered in the Republic of Cyprus. To cross with a car, you must buy separate third-party insurance at the checkpoint, sold for a few days at a time. Without it you will not be allowed through, and your existing comprehensive cover does not extend across the line.

Note the important asymmetry: crossing-point insurance is third-party only. Your CDW, your excess protection and your damage cover all stop at the checkpoint. If you damage the car in the south, you are personally liable for the repair.

What our rental agreement says

Taking a CypRentacar vehicle across the Green Line requires prior written permission. Ask us before you book if it matters to your plans — sometimes we can accommodate it on a specific vehicle, and sometimes we cannot, and it is far better to know at booking than at a checkpoint. Crossing without permission breaches the agreement and voids your cover entirely.

The practical alternatives

• Cross on foot at Ledra Street and explore southern Nicosia — this is what most visitors actually do, and it needs no insurance at all.
• Park at a crossing and take a taxi on the far side for a day trip to Larnaca or Limassol.
• Rent separately in the south for a multi-day southern leg; a second short rental is often cheaper than the risk of driving uninsured.

Flying in via the south

Many visitors land at Larnaca and cross north by road. If that is your plan, a car rented in the south usually cannot be brought north either — the same insurance logic applies in reverse. The cleanest arrangement is a transfer to the crossing and a North Cyprus rental car waiting on the northern side, which we can arrange along with delivery to Nicosia, Kyrenia or your hotel.
