Rent a Car in Cyprus: Why North and South Are Two Different Rentals

"Rent a car in Cyprus" is one search phrase covering two arrangements that do not interchange. People discover this at a checkpoint, holding a rental agreement that stops being valid about four metres ahead of where they are standing.

None of it is complicated once explained. It is just never explained before you book.

One island, two rental markets

Cyprus is divided by the UN buffer zone — the Green Line. North of it is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, with Ercan Airport, Kyrenia, Famagusta and northern Nicosia. South of it is the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member, with Larnaca and Paphos airports, Limassol and Ayia Napa.

Both sides drive on the left. Both use similar road signage conventions. What does not cross the line is insurance, and insurance is what a rental contract actually is.

The rule that catches people out

A vehicle insured in the north is not automatically covered in the south, and vice versa. To take a car across you must buy separate third-party insurance at the checkpoint, sold for a few days at a time. Without it you are not going through.

Note what that cover is: third party only. Your comprehensive cover, your excess protection and your damage waiver all stop at the line. Damage the car on the other side and the repair is yours personally. This is the single most expensive misunderstanding available to a visitor in Cyprus.

On top of that, most rental agreements on both sides require prior written permission to cross at all. Crossing without it does not just leave you underinsured — it voids the contract entirely. Which crossings take vehicles

• Metehan / Agios Dometios — Nicosia, the main vehicle crossing
• Beyarmudu / Pergamos — east
• Akyar / Strovilia — east, near Famagusta
• Ledra Street — central Nicosia, pedestrian only

What most people actually do

Three approaches, all of them cleaner than driving a hire car across:

• Walk across at Ledra Street. Park in northern Nicosia, cross on foot, spend the afternoon in the southern half of the same city, walk back. No insurance, no paperwork, no risk. This is what the overwhelming majority of visitors do.
• Park at a crossing and take a taxi on the far side for a day trip to Larnaca or Limassol.
• Rent separately on each side. If you are spending real time in both halves, two short rentals cost less than one uninsured incident.

Landing in the south, staying in the north

Plenty of visitors fly into Larnaca because the fares are better, then head north. A car rented in the south generally cannot come north — the same insurance logic in reverse.

Driving, once you have sorted which side you are on

• Drive on the left. Roundabouts give way to traffic already on them.
• Speed limits in the north — 50 km/h in towns, 65–80 on link roads, 100 on main highways. Radar checks are common on the Nicosia–Famagusta road.
• Fuel is priced in Turkish lira in the north and euro in the south. Fill up before the Karpaz Peninsula either way — there is very little out there.
• After an accident in the north, do not move the vehicles until police attend. A police report is required for any insurance claim.
• Tyres, glass and undercarriage are standard exclusions across the whole island. Beach tracks are where those claims happen.

So which side should you rent in?

Rent where you are sleeping. If your base is Kyrenia, Famagusta, İskele or Esentepe, rent in the north and collect at Ercan — free delivery, comprehensive insurance included, and the whole northern half of the island within an hour's drive. Treat any trip south as a day out on foot or by taxi rather than a driving problem to solve.
