Rent a Car for the Karpaz Peninsula: Fuel, Surfaces and Wild Donkeys

Everywhere else in North Cyprus, the car you rent is a matter of comfort and budget. The Karpaz Peninsula is the exception. Out here the vehicle, the fuel gauge and the time you set off all genuinely matter, and getting one of them wrong turns the best day on the island into a long one.

Fuel: the single most important line

Fill up before you enter the peninsula. Stations thin out badly past Yenierenköy and there is effectively nothing at the tip. People run this close every season and it is entirely avoidable — top up in İskele, Famagusta or Yenierenköy itself and stop thinking about it.

Surfaces: sealed, then less so

The main road down the peninsula is sealed and perfectly drivable in any category of car. What changes is everything that leaves it. Beach access tracks are gravel, the final approach to Golden Beach (Altınkum) is rough, and the lanes to the smaller coves range from adequate to optimistic.

This is why an SUV rental for Karpaz earns its price where it does not elsewhere. The clearance is real, not marketing. But note carefully: damage sustained off sealed roads is excluded from insurance across the entire North Cyprus market, in any vehicle. An SUV gives you ground clearance, not immunity. If a track looks washed out, it is.

Time it properly

Drive times, one way:

• From İskele — about 1 hour 20 to Golden Beach
• From Famagusta — about 1 hour 45
• From Kyrenia — about 2 hours 30
• From Ercan Airport — around 2 hours

Treat Karpaz as a full day, not an afternoon. Leave early, especially in summer — the ruins and the beaches have no shade at two in the afternoon in August, and you will want time at the tip rather than a rushed hour before the drive back in the dark.

What you came for

• Golden Beach (Altınkum) — a long, undeveloped stretch of sand at the end of the island. No loungers, no bars, no crowds.
• The wild donkeys — genuinely wild, genuinely everywhere, and entirely unbothered by cars. Slow down; they will not.
• Apostolos Andreas Monastery — restored, right at the tip, and worth the last twenty minutes.
• Dipkarpaz — a village where Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities still live side by side.

Which car, honestly

• SUV or crossover — the comfortable answer if beaches off the main road are the point of the trip.
• Standard car — perfectly fine if you are sticking to the sealed road, the monastery and Golden Beach's main approach.
• Economy — it will get there. You will just be more careful, more often.

Renting for it

Nobody bases themselves in Karpaz — there is very little there, which is the point. Most people drive out from İskele, Famagusta or Kyrenia, and we deliver free of charge to all three, as well as to Ercan Airport. If Karpaz is the centrepiece of your trip, book the SUV early: it is the category that sells out first in summer, and this is the one drive where the substitution actually costs you something.

One last note on cover. Tyres, glass and undercarriage are standard exclusions island-wide, and Karpaz is precisely where those claims happen. If the peninsula is on your itinerary, ask about extended cover before you set off rather than after.
