Rent a Car at Ercan Airport or Take a Taxi? The Honest Maths

A taxi gets you to the hotel. Car hire at Ercan gets you to the hotel and everywhere afterwards. Here is the comparison nobody at the arrivals desk will do for you.

You land at Ercan around midnight, which most people do, because that is when the flights from Istanbul and Ankara arrive. There is a taxi rank outside. There is also a man holding a set of keys with your name on the paperwork. Which one should you have booked?

If you have already decided and just want to know how the handover works, our Ercan Airport pickup guide covers that. This is the decision itself. The answer is usually obvious once you do the arithmetic, but almost nobody does it before they fly. So here it is.

The taxi does one job

A taxi from Ercan to Kyrenia takes about half an hour and costs what a one-way transfer costs anywhere. It gets you and your luggage to reception. That is the entire transaction.

The next morning you want breakfast somewhere that is not the hotel, and the day after that you want to see St Hilarion Castle, and by Wednesday you need a supermarket. Each of those is another taxi, negotiated separately, waited for separately. By day three the transfers have quietly cost more than the week of car hire at Ercan Airport you did not book.

The rental does the same job plus every job after it

When you rent a car at Ercan Airport with us, the transfer is not an extra — it is the first ten minutes of the rental. Delivery to the terminal is free. Collection on departure day is free too. So the airport run you would have paid a taxi for is already inside the price, and at the end of it you have a car sitting outside the hotel for the rest of the week.

That is the whole comparison, really. Same first journey. Wildly different second, third and fifteenth.

How the handover works at Ercan

There is no shuttle bus and no off-site depot to find, which is the part people brace for.

  1. You book online and give us your flight number.
  2. We track the flight. Land two hours late and the car is still there when you walk out — at no extra charge.
  3. A member of our team meets you in arrivals with the documents.
  4. Licence check, a walk-around of the car, keys, and you drive.

Night arrivals are standard for us rather than an exception, because Ercan works around the clock and so does the island's flight schedule.

What to have with you

  • Your physical driving licence, held at least a year
  • Your passport
  • The card used for the booking, in the main driver's name
  • The booking confirmation, on paper or on your phone

UK, EU, Turkish, US, Canadian and Australian licences are accepted as they are. An International Driving Permit is only recommended if your licence is not written in the Latin alphabet.

Drive times from the terminal

  • Nicosia (Lefkoşa) — about 15 km, 15 to 20 minutes
  • Kyrenia (Girne) — about 35 km, 30 to 35 minutes over the pass
  • Famagusta (Gazimağusa) — about 45 km, 40 to 45 minutes
  • İskele / Long Beach — about 55 km, 45 to 50 minutes
  • Esentepe — about 55 km, roughly 50 minutes

The Kyrenia road climbs through the Beşparmak mountains. It is well surfaced and fine in any category of car, but if it is your first time on the left and it is one in the morning, take the descent gently and use a low gear rather than riding the brakes.

When the taxi genuinely is the better call

Two cases, and they are real:

  • You are staying put. A weekend in one hotel, no sightseeing, no supermarket runs. Two transfers beat seven days of rental.
  • Nobody in the party can drive on the left comfortably and the thought of it would ruin the holiday. That is a fair reason and no amount of arithmetic overrides it.

For everything else — beaches, Bellapais, Salamis, Karpaz, a restaurant that is not the one attached to your hotel — renting a car at Ercan Airport is not the expensive option. It is the one that stops the island being a hotel with a view.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to rent a car at Ercan Airport or take a taxi?

For anything longer than a short stay in one place, car hire works out cheaper. Airport delivery and collection are free with CypRentacar, so the transfer is already inside the rental price — and you keep the car for every journey afterwards, instead of paying a separate fare each time.

Can I rent a car at Ercan Airport on a late-night flight?

Yes. Night arrivals are routine at Ercan and we deliver around the clock at no extra charge. Give us your flight number and we track it, so a delay changes the handover time rather than costing you the car.

Where do I collect the car at Ercan Airport?

In the arrivals hall. There is no shuttle bus and no off-site depot — a member of our team meets you with the vehicle and the documents, and the whole handover takes a few minutes.

How long does it take to drive from Ercan Airport to Kyrenia?

About 35 km and 30 to 35 minutes over the Beşparmak mountain pass. Nicosia is nearer at 15 to 20 minutes, and Famagusta takes around 45 minutes.
