The requirements to rent a car in North Cyprus are simpler than most of Europe, but there are a few specifics worth checking before you fly rather than at the airport desk.
Minimum age
The minimum age for car rental in Northern Cyprus is 21. Premium, luxury and larger SUV categories carry a higher minimum, typically 25, because of insurance underwriting rather than company policy. There is no upper age limit provided your licence is valid.
How long you must have held your licence
At least one year, held continuously. This is an insurance condition and applies to every named driver, not only the person paying.
Which licences are accepted
- UK licences — accepted directly, photocard plus counterpart where issued.
- EU and EEA licences — accepted directly.
- Turkish licences — accepted directly.
- US, Canadian, Australian and most international licences — accepted directly.
- Licences not in the Latin alphabet — bring an International Driving Permit alongside the original.
Digital-only licences are not sufficient on their own; bring the physical card.
Documents to bring to pickup
- Physical driving licence for every driver.
- Passport — required for the rental agreement.
- The credit or debit card used for the booking, in the main driver's name.
- Your booking confirmation (screen or print).
- Flight number if you are collecting at Ercan Airport.
Additional drivers
Anyone who will drive must be present at handover with their own licence and be added to the agreement. Adding a second driver is straightforward; driving unnamed voids the insurance completely.
