Car Rental Insurance in North Cyprus Explained: CDW, Excess and Deposits

Insurance is where cheap rentals stop being cheap. A plain-English breakdown of what is included with a North Cyprus rental car and what you would still pay after a claim.

Insurance is the least glamorous part of car rental in North Cyprus and the part that most often turns a cheap booking into an expensive one. This is what the terms mean and what you should actually check before you book.

What is included as standard

Every CypRentacar rental includes comprehensive cover (CDW — Collision Damage Waiver) and third-party liability as standard. You are never driving an uninsured vehicle, and the cover is already in the price you are quoted rather than sold to you at handover.

The excess is the number that matters

CDW does not mean "you pay nothing in every scenario". It caps your liability at the excess — the amount you remain responsible for if the car is damaged. Two quotes with the same daily rate and different excesses are not the same product. When you compare car hire in Northern Cyprus, ask for the excess figure in writing.

Standard exclusions across the island

These are near-universal in the North Cyprus market, not specific to any one company:

  • Tyres and wheels
  • Windscreen and glass
  • Undercarriage damage
  • Interior damage and lost keys
  • Damage caused while driving off sealed roads, under the influence, or by an unregistered driver

The undercarriage and tyre exclusions are worth taking seriously here. Beach access tracks and Karpaz roads are exactly where those claims happen.

Security deposits

A refundable deposit is standard practice and is released after the car comes back undamaged. Ask three questions: how much, how it is taken (card hold or charge), and how long the refund takes. A card hold is preferable to a charge-and-refund cycle.

Should you buy extra cover?

Extended or "super" cover reduces the excess, sometimes to zero, and can add tyre and glass protection. It is worth it if:

  • You are driving to Karpaz or using unsealed beach roads.
  • You are new to driving on the left.
  • You are renting long term and the exposure window is months rather than days.
  • You simply do not want a deposit sitting on your card.

Check your own travel insurance and credit card benefits first — some already include car hire excess cover, though many policies exclude the TRNC specifically, so read the territory clause rather than assuming.

Additional drivers

Every driver must be named on the agreement. An unnamed driver at the wheel voids the insurance entirely — which is the most expensive mistake available on a rental car, and also the easiest to avoid.

Free cancellation

Separate from insurance but often confused with it: our bookings come with free cancellation, so a change of plan does not cost you the rental.

Frequently asked questions

Is insurance included in car rental in North Cyprus?

With CypRentacar, comprehensive CDW and third-party liability are included in the quoted price as standard. What varies across the market is the excess you remain liable for after a claim.

What is not covered by rental car insurance in North Cyprus?

Tyres, wheels, windscreen and glass, undercarriage damage, interior damage and lost keys are standard exclusions island-wide, as is damage caused off sealed roads or by a driver not named on the agreement.

Do I need to pay a deposit to rent a car in North Cyprus?

A refundable security deposit is standard and is released once the car is returned undamaged. Extended cover can reduce or remove both the excess and the deposit.
